Young men avoid years in prison through participation in Wyoming’s Boot Camp Program. But young women don’t have that option – and that’s neither fair nor constitutional.

Wyoming’s youthful diversion “boot camp” program gives young male first offenders an opportunity to get their lives back on track and avoid years of incarceration. They receive career guidance and substance abuse treatment in a highly disciplined environment. Those who successfully complete the 6 month program are released. Many turn their lives around and become productive citizens rather than wards of the state. This benefits the young men, their families and society as a whole.

But women have been excluded from the program in clear violation of the equal protection clause of the US constitution. The Equality Project of the Northwest (EPNW) was born out of the imperative need to end this discriminatory practice in Wyoming.  Initiated by Jackson attorney John Robinson, EPNW envisions building a team of attorneys and supporting staff to provide expert legal services to women harmed by this discriminatory exclusion.

Please join us in this endeavor. The mission of Equality Project of the Northwest, a 501c3 non-profit organization, is to promote the equal protection of women and minorities under the law and to defend the rights of those individuals in all spheres of life and work. Donations to EPNW are tax deductible.

About

EPNW was started by Jackson attorney John Robinson. He is assembling a team of lawyers and support staff to defend civil rights. John Robinson has extensive plaintiff’s serious bodily injury and wrongful death litigation experience, as well as prosecuting insurance companies for their unfair treatment of his clients in first party bad-faith cases.  John opened his practice in 1998, after gaining trial experience as a Public Defender from 1995-1998.  He has tried more than 50 jury trials in a variety of cases.

Over the years his practice has  been diverse, with special emphasis on civil rights claims.  In more than 35 cases during the past 15 years, John has prosecuted government actors and agents, including colleges, campus security, school districts, school officials, local law enforcement officers and agencies, prison health care corporations, and social workers.  John has prosecuted more government officials in more cases than any other Wyoming attorney during that time, and is widely regarded as an expert in Civil Rights litigation.

UW Student Interns

The University of Wyoming Law School is supporting us in our cause by providing student interns to assist us. The students receive guidance from practicing lawyers and credit for participation.

More than 40 women now in prison qualified for the boot camp program but were denied participation solely because of their gender. Law students research each individual case and assist with preparations for challenging  these women’s exclusion from the program.
